Blackcurrant smells tart, juicy and green with a slightly sulphurous twang, giving a fragrance a bright, lively and sharp dark-fruit effect.
Perfumers usually rely on an absolute solvent-extracted from the buds of the Ribes nigrum shrub, supported by synthetic fruity molecules. Known in French as cassis, the note swings between leafy greenness and jammy sweetness. Blackcurrant is almost always a top note. It pairs with rose, violet, bergamot, peony, jasmine, patchouli and musks, and works well in both fresh florals and chypres.
