Perfumes with Agarwood

Agarwood, also called oud, smells dark, woody and smoky with animalic, leathery and faintly sweet facets: a complex scent produced by infected Aquilaria trees in South-East Asia.

In response to a fungal infection the tree forms a dark resin; the resin-saturated wood is then steam- or water-distilled into oud oil. Because natural oud is very expensive, most perfumes use synthetic oud accords. Its scent can evoke leather, barnyard, incense and dried fruit. Agarwood sits mainly in the base of a fragrance. It pairs with rose, saffron, sandalwood, patchouli, frankincense and amber.

Agarwood appears in 1,237 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a base note.
