Thyme smells warm, sharp and herbal with a slightly medicinal edge, bringing to mind dry Mediterranean hillsides and adding aromatic vigour to a fragrance.
Leaves and flowering tops of Thymus vulgaris and related species are steam-distilled into an essential oil whose main components, thymol and carvacrol, give it both spice and an antiseptic facet. Thyme is used mostly in the heart of a fragrance and often in the opening. It pairs with lavender, rosemary, sage, bergamot, cedar, vetiver and leather, and appears in aromatic and fougère compositions.
