Leaves and flowering tops of Thymus vulgaris and related species are steam-distilled into an essential oil whose main components, thymol and carvacrol, give it both spice and an antiseptic facet. It pairs with lavender, rosemary, sage, bergamot, cedar, vetiver and leather, and appears in aromatic and fougère compositions.
