Perfumes with Patchouli

Patchouli smells earthy, damp and woody, with a camphorous edge and a dark sweetness that can recall cocoa or wet forest floor. It comes from the leaves of Pogostemon cablin, mainly grown in Indonesia.

The leaves are dried and lightly fermented before steam distillation. Fresh oil is sharp and musty, while aged oil turns smoother and almost wine-like. Patchouli usually sits in the base of a fragrance, sometimes in the heart, and gives it depth and staying power. It pairs well with rose, vanilla, amber, vetiver, bergamot and oakmoss, and it is a pillar of chypre perfumes.

Patchouli appears in 30,526 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a base note.
