Perfumes with Opoponax

Opoponax smells warm, sweet and balsamic with honeyed and slightly lavender-like nuances; also called sweet myrrh, it gives a fragrance a soft, powdery resinous depth.

The resin of Commiphora guidottii, a tree of Somalia and Ethiopia, is collected and then solvent-extracted into a resinoid or steam-distilled into an oil. It is rounder and sweeter than the bitter side of myrrh, with hints of warm honey, dried fruit and wood. Opoponax sits mainly in the base of a fragrance. It pairs with frankincense, labdanum, vanilla, benzoin, rose and spices.

Opoponax appears in 927 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a base note.
