Perfumes with Oakmoss
Oakmoss smells earthy, green and shadowy, like a damp forest floor after rain, with faint hints of salty sea air, bark and ink. It is not a true moss but a lichen, Evernia prunastri, that grows on oak trees, mainly harvested in the Balkans and Central Europe.
An absolute is obtained by solvent extraction. Because international fragrance standards restrict its use, perfumers now rely on low-allergen extracts or synthetic substitutes. Oakmoss sits firmly in the base. Together with bergamot, patchouli, labdanum, rose and vetiver, it forms the foundation of chypre and fougère perfumes.
Oakmoss appears in 8,980 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a base note.
