Perfumes with Licorice
Licorice smells sweet, aniseed-like and slightly salty with woody and earthy undertones, giving a fragrance a dark, gourmand and gently spicy character.
An extract can be made from the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, but its scent is weak, so licorice in perfume is usually an accord of anethole, anise and star anise with synthetic gourmand molecules. It evokes black liquorice sweets, light caramel and roots. Licorice sits mainly in the heart of a fragrance and often in the base. It pairs with violet, iris, anise, vanilla, tonka, patchouli and musks.
