Perfumes with Labdanum

Labdanum smells dark, warm, resinous and honeyed, with leathery, slightly animalic and salty undertones, and it is very close to what perfumers call amber. It comes from the sticky gum of Cistus ladanifer, the rockrose shrub of the Mediterranean, with Spain as the main producer.

The resin is collected by boiling leaves and twigs, then processed into a resinoid or absolute. Labdanum is a cornerstone of the amber accord and, being tenacious, mostly sits in the base. It pairs well with vanilla, benzoin, patchouli, incense, rose, leather and oakmoss, and it is essential to chypre perfumes.

Labdanum appears in 6,666 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a base note.
