Juniper berries smell fresh, resinous and pine-like with a peppery, slightly fruity twist, carrying the characteristic aroma of gin into a fragrance with crisp, cool clarity.
Ripe berries of Juniperus communis are crushed and steam-distilled into an essential oil rich in terpenes such as alpha-pinene, myrcene and sabinene. Compared with oil from the twigs, berry oil is a little softer and fruitier. It appears about equally in the top and heart of a fragrance. It pairs with lavender, bergamot, grapefruit, black pepper, cedar, vetiver and leather.
