Perfumes with Benzoin

Perfumes with Benzoin

Benzoin smells sweet, warm, balsamic and lightly powdery, a resin very close to vanilla with soft hints of cinnamon and caramel. It is the hardened gum that seeps from the bark of Styrax trees.

Siam benzoin, from Laos and Thailand, is the more vanilla-like type, while Sumatra benzoin is drier and sharper. The resin is processed with solvents into a resinoid. Because it evaporates slowly, benzoin sits mainly in the base, where it also helps fix lighter notes. It pairs well with vanilla, labdanum, tonka bean, incense, rose, sandalwood and musk, and it is a frequent part of amber accords.

Benzoin appears in 6,626 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a base note.
