Perfumes with Styrax

Styrax smells warm, balsamic and slightly smoky with a leathery, cinnamon-like sweetness, giving a fragrance a dark, smooth and resinous depth.

Two sources matter in perfumery: Liquidambar orientalis, native to south-western Anatolia, and Liquidambar styraciflua from Central America. The balsam collected from the trunk is steam-distilled into an oil or solvent-extracted into a resinoid. Its cinnamic facets, amber warmth and faint tarriness make it a classic fixative. Styrax is used mainly in the base. It pairs with labdanum, benzoin, vanilla, leather, frankincense and rose.

Styrax appears in 1,337 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a base note.
