Smoke smells dry, sooty, slightly tarry and warm, evoking burning wood, a fireplace, incense or a campfire; it is an impression built from several materials rather than one raw material.
The effect is usually created with birch tar, cade oil, guaiac wood, vetiver and synthetics such as guaiacol or isobutyl quinoline. Depending on the blend it can lean towards leather, incense, charred wood or tobacco. Smoke sits mostly in the heart of a fragrance and often in the base. It pairs with frankincense, leather, tobacco, vetiver, oud, labdanum and vanilla.
