Perfumes with Oak
Oak smells dry, warm and slightly tannic with a vanilla-like nuance that recalls wine and whisky barrels, giving a fragrance a solid, mature and faintly smoky woodiness.
Oak wood does not yield an oil commonly used in perfumery, so the effect is usually built from oak lactone, woody synthetics and vanillic materials. Oakmoss is a different material entirely, coming from a lichen that grows on the tree. Expect barrel staves, dry sawdust and a coconut-like touch. Oak appears in the heart and base of a fragrance. It pairs with whisky, cognac, tobacco, vanilla, leather and vetiver.
