Perfumes with Leather

Leather smells smoky, dry, slightly tarry and animalic, like a worn jacket, a saddle or a new pair of shoes. There is no natural leather extract; the note is an accord built by the perfumer.

Historically it was composed with birch tar and castoreum, and today it is mostly created with synthetic molecules. The result can be soft and powdery like suede, or dark, smoky and rugged. Leather is tenacious, so it usually sits in the base, sometimes in the heart. It pairs well with saffron, iris, tobacco, oud, patchouli, vetiver and rose.

Leather appears in 9,892 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a base note.
