Fir smells cool, green, balsamic and slightly sweet, softer and more resinous than pine, evoking a forest walk or a freshly cut Christmas tree.
Needles and twigs of Abies species, notably Siberian fir and silver fir, are steam-distilled into an oil, while fir balsam absolute is darker and almost jammy. Bornyl acetate gives the scent its clean, needle-like character. Fir sits mainly in the heart of a fragrance and frequently in the base. It pairs with pine, juniper, lavender, frankincense, labdanum and vetiver.
