Perfumes with Cloves
Clove smells warm, sharp, sweet and slightly medicinal, a dense spice that recalls mulled drinks, oranges studded with cloves and a faintly smoky warmth. It comes from the dried flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum, produced mainly in Madagascar and Indonesia.
The oil is steam-distilled from the buds, leaves or stems, and its scent is dominated by eugenol. The same molecule gives carnation its spicy tone. Clove mostly sits in the heart of a fragrance. It pairs well with cinnamon, orange, rose, carnation, vanilla, oud, tobacco and amber, adding depth to warm spicy compositions.
Cloves appears in 2,150 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a heart note.
