Perfumes with Clove

Clove smells hot, pungent and slightly sweet, with a smoky, almost medicinal edge: the familiar eugenol-rich warmth of the dried flower bud used in cooking and mulled drinks.

The oil comes from the buds, leaves or stems of Syzygium aromaticum, grown in Indonesia and Madagascar, and is obtained by steam distillation. Eugenol gives it both its spice and the faint dentist's-office note. Clove mostly sits in the heart of a fragrance, though it also flashes in the opening. It pairs especially well with rose, carnation accords, cinnamon, vanilla, orange and resins.

Clove appears in 1,985 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a heart note.
