Perfumes with Clary Sage

Clary sage smells herbal, slightly sweet, musky and tea-like, an aromatic note with soft hints of dried fruit, tobacco and amber that make it warmer than common sage. It comes from the flowering tops of Salvia sclarea, produced in France, Russia and Bulgaria.

The oil is obtained by steam distillation, and the plant also yields sclareol, the starting material for ambroxan. It is gentler and less camphorous than common sage. Clary sage mostly sits in the heart of a fragrance. It pairs well with lavender, bergamot, cedar, vetiver, ambroxan, tobacco and musk.

Clary Sage appears in 2,355 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a heart note.
