Castoreum smells dark, smoky and leathery with tarry, birch-like and faintly sweet animalic facets, giving a fragrance a warm leather depth.
It was historically obtained as a tincture or absolute from the castor sacs of North American and Siberian beavers; modern perfumery uses synthetic reconstructions almost exclusively. The scent combines tanned leather, smoke and a gentle animal warmth. Castoreum sits mainly in the base of a fragrance. It pairs with leather, birch, labdanum, tobacco, orris and vanilla, and is a classic component of leather accords.
