Bourbon vanilla smells dark, creamy and sweet with smoky, rum-like depth: the rich vanilla of Vanilla planifolia grown on Indian Ocean islands, named after Réunion's former name, Île Bourbon.

The term covers cured vanilla pods from Madagascar, Réunion and the Comoros. The pods are solvent- or CO2-extracted into an absolute or extract. Beyond vanillin sweetness, the scent carries dried fruit, leather and tobacco facets. Bourbon vanilla sits mainly in the base of a fragrance, adding warmth and lasting power. It pairs with tonka, benzoin, tobacco, rum, sandalwood and orris.
