Perfumes with Birch

Birch smells smoky, tarry and leathery: the scent of birch bark tar, which gives fragrances a sooty, dark and rugged depth and forms the backbone of classic Russian leather accords.

Bark of Betula species is heated in a dry distillation process to produce birch tar, used in perfumery only in refined form and limited amounts; the effect is often supported by synthetic leather and smoke molecules. It evokes burnt wood, tar and tanned hides. Birch appears in the heart and base of a fragrance. It pairs strongly with leather, labdanum, vetiver, castoreum, juniper and tobacco.

Birch appears in 1,275 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a heart note.
