Perfumes with Ambergris

Ambergris smells salty, marine, softly sweet and musky, a skin-like warmth that recalls sun-dried skin and sea air on the shore. It originates in the digestive system of the sperm whale and matures for years while floating at sea.

Because genuine ambergris collected from beaches is rare and costly, modern perfumery reproduces it almost entirely with synthetic molecules such as ambroxan. It is tenacious and acts as a fixative, so it mostly sits in the base of a fragrance. Ambergris pairs well with musk, sandalwood, iris, sea notes, labdanum and rose, adding radiance and a sensual glow.

Ambergris appears in 6,117 perfumes in the Fisfis catalogue and is used mostly as a base note.
